If someone or something is continually portrayed in the media in a certain manner, then eventually the public starts to view the media portrayals as fact. Without putting yourself in front of the people who do the hiring you can't get a bartending job.
To be a bartender, you have to posses a few qualities that frankly many of us don't really have. Of course, drink making is of the top priority. You also learn about customer service.
So next time you show up to a bar on a weekend willing to spend a hundred dollars on overpriced cocktails, consider being on the other side of the bar. Upselling helps increase the bar's profits by having the bartender suggest upgrades to premium liquors, try more expensive mixed drinks or introduce them to new brands of higher margin liquor. Have the DJ give a shot out to the bartender, this makes people remember your name and it reminds them to go to the bar and get a drink and leave at tip.
Customers want and expect to see a smiling face making their drinks, so have fun. The bartending career can bring about lots of money.
